        The Newport Central Catholic boys basketball team received its first wakeup call of the season last week, and it was like standing next to the city's World Peace Bell when it rings.
Saturday's Games
Cincinnati boys basketball games
        Alex Thinnes's free throw with 40 seconds remaining gave Taylor a 50-49 victory over previously undefeated Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy at Taylor.

N.Ky. boys basketball games
        Ross Neltner scored a game-high 23 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead Highlands to a 48-34 victory over Pendleton County.
Friday's Games
Elder knocks off No. 1 St. X
        Basketball Elder style is 32 minutes of intensity. But it took the Panthers 36 minutes of in-your-face basketball to defeat No.1 St.Xavier in overtime Friday at St.Xavier.

Loveland holds off Wilmington
        Loveland coach Mike Ferone's warning to Matt Beck after a free-throw drill Thursday was simple — “Now you had better make them at the end of the game.” On Friday, Beck did.

        Moeller scored the last eight points of the game and held LaSalle to four points in the fourth quarter for a come-from-behind victory.

Cincinnati Hills League games
        Rob Hern scored 13 of his 21 points in the first half, leading Madeira over host Mariemont.

Greater Miami Conference games
        Nate Rusbosin sank a 40-footer with 1.9 seconds left to give Hamilton a victory over Sycamore.

Miami Valley Conference games
        D'Andre Fitzhugh scored 18 points and Alex Kemphaus added 15 to lead North College Hill over Lockland.

Other Fort Ancient Valley Conference games
        Senior forward Tyler Crain scored 22 pointsto lead Mason over Northwest.

Queen City Conference games
        Senior center P.J. Mills and junior guard Robert Hite led Winton Woods to its 10th straight win.

Southern Buckeye Conference games
        Clermont NE's John Thacker scored 11 of his 15 points to key a 28-point fourth quarter.

Other Cincinnati games
        Junior guard Jason Francis scored all of his game-high 18 points in the first half to help Springboro remain undefeated in the Mid-Miami League.

N.Ky. boys basketball games
        A 22-foot shot at the buzzer by Jeff Colson came up short as Louisville Pleasure Ridge Park beat Newport Central Catholic in the Louisville Invitational Tournament.

        Kenny Brady and Derek Aden each scored 11 points and Keith Hershberger had 10 — all in the fourth quarter — as Reading beat Wyoming 56-46.

        Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy guard Jay Morelock says there was a message in his team's 55-46 victory over Cincinnati Country Day Tuesday night.

        Chris Norwell and Marcus Thompson combined to score 18 points in the fourth quarter as Anderson, ranked No.10 in the Enquirer's Division I poll, rallied for a 65-53 victory at Amelia.

        Ben Lye had game highs of 21 points and 12 rebounds as Scott surprised Newport Central Catholic, the No.1 team in the Enquirer's Northern Kentucky boys basketball poll, 69-56.

        If there are two things Covington Catholic basketball coach Mike Listerman likes, they are balanced scoring and players who work hard.

        St. Xavier is the No.1 team in Division I in the first weekly Associated Press Ohio boys poll of the 2000-2001 season.

Elder knocks off No. 2 Western Hills
        Western Hills coach Lannis Timmons gave credit to Elder's defense after the No. 7 Panthers knocked off the No. 2 Mustangs, 63-54, Monday before a near-capacity crowd at the 1,900-seat Elder gym.
