Allen Howard graduated from the University of Nebraska in Omaha in
1959 with a degree in Journalism. He has held a variety of journalism
jobs starting with an internship as a reporter/photographer at KMTV
Channel 3 in Omaha. He has been editor of The Houston Informer;
managing editor and a founder of the Houston Forward Times; a
reporter/photographer at the Cleveland Call-Post; an editor at the
Cincinnati Call-Post; and has held a variety of positions since first
starting at the Enquirer in 1968. He has covered the city hall,
federal courts, labor and neighborhoods beats, and served on the
Enquirer Editorial Board for nine years.
He also has worked as a nursing aide and as an administrative
assistant for Robert Taft, Jr. (then he a U.S. Senator).
He has won many journalism awards as well as awards from such
organizations as the NAACP and the Progress Association for Economic
Development.
He now writes the Metro section's Some Good News column six times a
week. "I seek out people helping other people, a cause, a community,
an organization, special fund raisers for charity, students doing
special projects to help the community or people doing volunteer
work. Since Sept. 11, 2001, much of the column has been about
activities for disaster relief efforts."
