City has right 'Karma' for Mood

BY JIM KNIPPENBERG
The Cincinnati Enquirer

So what, you were wondering, was the story with that film crew all over town last week?

It was Mood, the three-man hip-hop group with a hot CD, Doom (Blunt Records). Members Dante (Fleming), Main-Flo (Jermaine Manley), and Jahson (Jayson Grimes) spent the better part of the week shooting the video for their ''Karma'' single.

Led by Arthur Jafa (Spike Lee's cinematographer) the eight-member crew showed up at Union Terminal, Rumpke, the Serpentine Wall and more.

No word on when it will be out.

In a pine grove

''I've never seen anything like this. Do we have time to go around and count the Christmas trees?'' That would be producer Danute Miskinis at Ornamentasia, a Saturday party thrown by designer Dale Lamson and salon owner Rondle West at their East Walnut Hills home.

Turns out they had 26 trees (real trees), all decorated. No room went untouched: Bedrooms, family, living, sitting and guest rooms, even the deck (which the depraved among us used for a smoking lounge).

The party for 200 of their nearest and dearest was Major - so Major that tony Town and Country called for info.

Guests included hyper-involved artsy types Sylvia Benjamin; Bill and Joanie Lotts, Melody Sawyer Richardson, Shelby Wood; designer John Harrison; Ballet boss Victoria Morgan (want to embarrass her? Ask her about when she barged in on Psst! while he was, uh, making room for more champagne); musician Fred Martens; developer David Herriman; downtown florist (Ivy) Scott Atkinson; and many other A-listers.

The black-tie do went until well after 2 a.m. with guests around the piano, first for show tunes, then Christmas songs when Lamson played. Valet parkers, meanwhile, were wringing their hands.

Words, please

This from our file marked The Encore That Almost Wasn't 'Cause, Well, Nobody Knew The Words.

It happened at Jingle Bell Rock, the oldies concert WGRR-FM threw at Music Hall. Closing act Lou Christie was on. Chubby Checker, Brian Highland, Billy Joe Royal, Tommy Roe, Sonny Geraci, David Somerville were all waiting for the finale, a ''Jingle Bell Rock'' sing-along honoring the late Bobby Helms.

Checker was talking to ad exec Rob Riggsbee when he realized, ''we're on in three minutes. Do you know the words to that song?'' Riggsbee didn't. Nor did Royal, Highland or anyone else.

By now there were 30 seconds left and the entire cast was in a huddle trying to come up with lyrics. At which point Rita Helms, Bobby's widow, walked by, shook her head and gave a lesson.

Psst! appears Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday. Have an item to report? Call Jim Knippenberg at 768-8513; fax: 768-8330.
