Where can you get a floor show with your haircut? Try Northside's Taylor Jameson Hair Design when TV song and dance man Soupy Sales is there for one of his twice a week style jobs.
Mr. Sales is in town working on This Train, a film written and directed by Cincinnati poet Aralee Strange. It's filming in Adams County but soon moves to Over-the-Rhine.
Sales plays one of several characters who converge on a small town cafe.
"He's been fun," Jameson says. "He comes in for a blow dry twice a week -- he's fussy about his hair -- and is so entertaining and popular with customers. By the time we finish, everyone is laughing. "He's toured the neighborhood, talked to neighbors, posed for pictures with our mounted police."
If you haven't seen Soupy, you may yet: He's here four more weeks.
HOMETOWN BOYZ: We're going to need a round of applause this morning. Clap it for Notorious Hot Boyz.
The local rappers, Tight, Stickey and T_Bull played Fountain Square for Cinci-bration last week. A few days earlier, they did a return engagement in Atlanta (the first was a Greek festival in April) for a new groups workshop. They're also known in Louisville, where they did a Derby party, and in Lima, Ohio, where they've done festivals and shows on WLMJ-AM.
Their CD single, "Posted," is getting airplay in a dozen or so cities and a CD, About Our Business, will be out in September (both on Cincinnati's Bizzy Records label).
A tour is in the offing, "when the CD hits," says Ronnie Richardson, their career consultant. First, one of these: ClapClapClap.
BUZZ AROUND TOWN: Keeping eyes and ears open, Psst! has heard . . .
That Ginny Meacham is headed for a future issue of Bon Appetit magazine, and she doesn't even cook.
Meacham is a health department inspector well known at outdoor pigouts such as Taste of Cincinnati and Oktoberfest, where she checks to make sure the food won't kill someone.
She also participates in the annual Gemuetlichkeit Games that kickoff Oktoberfest with teams competing on Fountain Square in events such as a race carrying beer mugs (full, of course), barrel rolling and log sawing.
Meacham does the beer mug race. "I guess they felt sorry for me, because I'm pathetic -- always a runner-up. The guy from the magazine said, "Oh, that means you come in second?' I said, "No, fourth.' These games have lots of winners, but only one runner-up."
That Joyce Wise, Emmy award-winning producer for Cincinnati Reflections (it aired on WCET in April) will soon do part two in the series. She's considering three topics: downtown's former grand department stores (Rollman's, Pogue's, Mabley & Carew, Alms & Doepke, Shillito's); former grand theaters (Shubert, Albee, Palace, Pike Opera House, Grand, Capitol and Keith's); and Music Hall.
While Wise debates the topic, she is asking for help from anyone who worked at the places, has photos, newsclips, memorabilia, etc. Call 984-9835.
