Kentucky columnist Karen Gutiérrez has a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Missouri. Before arriving at The Cincinnati Enquirer in 1997, she covered news for the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel and roamed Appalachia for the Lexington Herald-Leader.

Her column philosophy: "I'm fascinated by Northern Kentucky, which practices Southern hospitality just a river away from the Yanks. We're simultaneously down-home and up-and-coming. I have two goals: Share the good news with readers and make sure no one gets too comfortable."
