'Zombie' fans await big-screen blood, guts

And this just in for zombies and zombie fans: Zombie Cult Massacre is almost finished and ready for editing.

That from director Jeff Dunn, who has been on the film since late summer.

Zombie, don't you know, is about a battle among cult members, bikers and zombies. It has 12 principal cast members and 150 extras. Most of the filming was at Camp Ross Trails, an scout camp in Ross, Ohio.

''The movie's really fun,'' actor Lonzo Jones says, ''all full of blood and guts. Definitely not something you want to see at breakfast.''

Dunn knows blood: Before Zombie, he worked on the locally produced Vamps: Deadly Dream Girls, a blood-soaked job about vampire strippers.

The really good news, and what everyone is talking about right now, is that Dunn is pretty sure the film will go the theatrical release route and be out by spring of 1997.

HEARD AROUND TOWN: ''At 54, I'm going through an identity crisis. All of a sudden, I'm just someone's dad.''

That would be Marty Brennaman, chatting it up over pate and cocktails at last week's Kids Helping Kids benefit at J's Fresh Seafood. Someone told Marty they ran into son Thom Brennaman and that's what started it.

''You are Thom's dad, aren't you?' I say, no, I'm Marty. I have an identity.'' He was laughing when he said it.

Young Thom, formerly of Channel 5, is one highly visible soul. He does UC basketball, play-by-play for Fox's NFL broadcasts and baseball, too.

BUZZ AROUND TOWN: Keeping eyes and ears open, Psst! has heard ...

That jitterbuggers are be-bopping their way to Cincinnati. Again.

It's true, says Paul Hennessey of the Cincinnati Bop Club, a group founded in 1992 to preserve the art of jitterbug, shag, bop and swing dancing. Last year, about 1,100 members of the National Bop Association convened here: Four days of happy feet set to the tune of bluesy rock 'n' roll.

Wellsir, turns out everyone had such fun last year they're headed back Nov. 7-9. Look for 1,400 of them from 47 clubs in 25 states. They'll be headquartered at the Regal Hotel and, yes, they'd be delighted if you popped by to cut a rug. Check with Hennessey - 489-4983 - for details. The local club, for the record, dances 8-11:30 p.m. Tuesdays at Auttos in Sharonville ...

That there is a massive comedy show in the works. And we do mean massive - 10 performers, most of them veterans of BET and Def Comedy Jam, carrying on for heaven only knows how many hours. Cincinnati comedian William Alexander has spent months and no end of worry and headaches putting the deal together. Now it's final: It's 9 p.m. Nov. 8 at the Apple (10575 Chester Road) and includes: T.J. Vaugn; James Alberson; Tony ''Boo Boo'' Yates; Robert Day; Terapufius; Darryl Williams; Rip; Kevin Garnier; and Frank Z.
That's one heck of a lot of giggling ...

COOK ON, PAUL: Palace chef Paul Dagenbach had a grand old time mixing things up with Julia Child recently in Dallas. ''A group of us met with her and with Dean Fearing (chef at Mansion on Turtle Creek, and once a Maisonette cook) for a little talk and a question-and-answer period.

''She's fabulous - 84 and as warm and funny as you think. Somebody asked her, 'My doctor said give up butter. What should I do.' Without missing a beat, she shot back, 'Change doctors.' ''

Dagenbach and seven other chefs spent about two hours with Fearing and Child, talking about chefs, telling jokes (''she's very funny when she works Dean over,'' Dagenbach says); nouvelle cuisine (she used to hate it, now she likes it); TV cooking shows (she loves them); and doctors who tell people to give up butter (she doesn't love that).

Psst! appears Sunday, Wednesday and Friday. Have an item to report? Call Jim Knippenberg at 768-8513; fax: 768-8330. And listen to his Weekend Report with Jerry Thomas at 8:30 a.m. Fridays on WCKY (550 kHz).
