No. 1 in the nation and No. 2 in Cincinnati. That's where the University of Cincinnati Bearcats find themselves this morning, thanks to a 71-69 loss to Xavier in the Crosstown Shootout Tuesday night.
GAME STORY
Here's the trouble with being ranked No.1 in the country in November, and playing someone other than Pan American before all the parts fit: Suddenly, the shakedown cruise turns into a wreck on the rocks. It's like taking calculus to get better at algebra. It's even worse when that someone you're playing is Xavier, and you are Cincinnati.
PAUL DAUGHERTY COLUMN
Sherwin Anderson didn't want his quote in print, but he made his feelings known the day before the Crosstown Shootout. Xavier's senior guard said without hesitation that his team would win. "We've got big hearts," he said after the game. "Xavier is a school of pride. We care too much about each other. We refuse to lose.''
STORY
UC All-American Danny Fortson was a gracious loser, saying if No. 1-ranked UC had to lose, it might as well have been to Xavier.
