Minister's 'miracle'
Last-minute change of plans
proves a lifesaver

BY TOM O'NEILL
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Blessed beyond words. Amazed by the breathtaking ways in which the Lord works. Heartbroken for those who died.

The emotions come over Cora Edwards of Brookhaven, Miss. the day after her husband, Eugene, was to have been on Comair Flight 3272 - but wasn't.

Mr. Edwards, a Baptist minister and union official for Delphi Packard Electric, changed his plans at the last minute to drive his daughter, Tiffany, back to Jackson State University, where she is a sophomore majoring in nursing. Three co-workers, including one close family friend, were killed.

Mrs. Edwards was watching crash coverage on the evening news when a panicked friend, aware of Mr. Edwards' travel plans, called to say that he was dead.

By then, Mr. Edwards was sitting next to his wife, unaware of the exact flight until he checked his pre-paid ticket. It read: ''3272.''

''I can't explain,'' Mrs. Edwards said, her tears turning to sobs. ''A miracle. That's all. A miracle. When I left home yesterday morning, I just knew he was gone to Ohio.''

She quickly called her friend, Arlevia Brice, whose husband, Arthur, a Baptist assistant pastor, Packard co-worker and uncle of NFL player Alundis Brice, was aboard Flight 3272.

''I went right to her house,'' Mrs. Edwards said. ''I knew she needed me.''

The Edwards' son, Keith, said simply, ''We are very, very blessed.''

For the elder Mr. Edwards, a pastor at Hopewell Baptist Church in this southern Mississippi town, Sunday services will never be the same.
