Mail Boxes Etc. plans
2,000 Banc One ATMs

BY PERRY BROTHERS
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Mail Boxes Etc. (MBE) and Columbus-based Banc One Corp. announced plans to install 2,000 automated teller machines nationwide in MBE's postage drop and packaging franchises.

There are 19 MBE franchised stores in Greater Cincinnati, but the locations for the ATMs had not been determined as of Tuesday. At least 1,000 ATMs should be in place by 1998, the companies said.

Tony DeSio, the vice chairman and chief executive of Mail Boxes Etc., said his San Diego-based company has wanted to expand its financial service offerings. In Banc One, MBE found a natural match, he said, because both serve a large base of small businesses.

''I think it's going to be very lucrative for our franchisees,'' Mr. DeSio said Tuesday.

The revenues from ATM transactions will fund machine installation and maintenance, said John A. Russell, a Banc One spokesman. After an undisclosed start-up period, MBE will receive a percentage of the ATM fees.

The project will more than double the total of ATMs that Banc One operates. Banc One now has 1,996 ATMs primarily in Ohio and Texas.

Both companies declined to comment on the total cost of the project or the anticipated revenue from transaction fees.

''The real income will be if we can generate additional banking,'' Mr. Russell said.

The companies also announced two pilot programs Tuesday. For about 18 months, two Banc One branches will have MBE kiosk-style postal and packaging centers. During the same period, four MBE locations will have high-tech banking centers.

The banking centers will include automated loan machines, interactive video conferencing with bank representatives and a meeting area.
