Hudepohl-Schoenling brewery is now Boston Beer Co.
Boston Beer purchased the brewing operations at Central Parkway and Central Avenue Feb. 28 under an agreement announced late last year.
Boston Beer will make the Hudepohl-Schoenling line of beers. It has been brewing Samuel Adams under contract at the plant for at least a year.
Hudepohl-Schoenling Brewing Co. will continue to create and market beer and non-alcoholic beverages, but its 104 brewery employees now work for Boston Beer.
A purchase price hasn't been disclosed. However, the company's tax-incentive agreement with the city states that Boston Beer paid $4.6 million for machinery and equipment and will invest another $620,000.
Boston Beer is expected to complete the first phase of the expansion by December 1998. If the company sells enough beer, it could invest another $8.3 million for additional expansion by 2000.
The brewery has a capacity of 390,000 barrels. Boston Beer brews 15 year-round and seasonal beers under the Samuel Adams banner. It was started in 1984 by Jim Koch, whose father was a brewmeister's apprentice at Hudepohl-Schoenling in the 1940s.
