INDUSTRY NOTES: REAL ESTATE
BOMA for
'retail wheeling'

BY LEAH BETH WARD
The Cincinnati Enquirer

The Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) International supports shopping for electrical power, also known as retail wheeling.

The real estate advocacy group backs Rep. Dan Schaefer's Electric Consumers Power to Choose Act of 1997. The bill would guarantee retail customers the right to choose among competitive electricity providers by Dec. 15, 2000.

BOMA has 16,000 members. Mr. Schaefer is a Colorado Republican.

''The only way to clear a path to an open and competitive energy marketplace is through prompt, decisive action and federal legislation,'' said G.A. ''Chip'' Julin III, president of Washington, D.C.-based BOMA International.

Locally, Cinergy Corp. is a leading proponent of retail wheeling in Ohio and other service territories. A special joint Ohio House and Senate committee is expected to report on utility deregulation to the General Assembly by Oct. 1.
