Woman, 93, loses $100,000 in scheme
Pair sought after roof-coating job

LUDLOW, Ky. - Police are searching for a man and woman they say stole nearly $100,000 in cash Tuesday from a homeowner, in an alleged scheme involving roofing materials.

Ludlow Police Sgt. Benny Johnson said the incident occurred about 2 p.m. Tuesday at the home of Aileen Hellebush, 93, of the 800 block of Oak Street.

"She's doing all right," said Nancy Hellebush, Mrs. Hellebush's niece by marriage. "Of course, she feels violated. Money is not the most important thing to her. We're all just happy she didn't get hurt."

According to Sgt. Johnson, a man came to Mrs. Hellebush's house and offered to apply an unknown substance to the roof for $2,000. He said Mrs. Hellebush paid in cash after the work was completed.

Nancy Hellebush said the woman, who had a baby with her, asked to see Mrs. Hellebush's garden behind the garage. "Her fault is, she trusts people, she said. "They had a small child with them, which would make her trust them more."

The Hellebush family thinks that while the two women looked at the tomatoes, corn and blackberries, the man took the money, which was hidden at the residence.

Sgt. Johnson said the man is 5 feet, 4 inches tall, between 30 and 45 years old, weighs 150 to 160 pounds and has collar-length brown hair. He was wearing a sleeveless teal-green T-shirt and blue jeans.

There is no description of the woman, but Sgt. Johnson said the two left in a late-model white pickup.

Anyone with information about the crime may call Sgt. Johnson at 261-8186 or Kenton County Police at 261-8185.
