Locals root for ham on the lam
Pot-bellied porker perplexes pursuers

BY JANE PRENDERGAST
The Cincinnati Enquirer

LUDLOW, Ky. - This little piggie went to Covington.

And rooted through some yards, got chased and dodged a bullet. The pot-bellied pig that has been on the lam for at least a couple of weeks remained so Wednesday despite the efforts of officials and residents who have vowed to keep the animal from being killed.

Neighbors think this is the same pig a Ludlow police officer shot at about two weeks ago on Hazen Street. He missed.

Residents around Covington's Highway and Western avenues have since spotted the grayish animal in their neighborhood.

The pig has been a glutton for residents' generosity. Word is the pig even went after one man's ear of sweet corn - while he was eating it. "We want it to be caught alive so someone can keep it," said Debbie Bramlage, who lives on Highway Avenue.

Debbie Brooks, animal control officer for Covington, got close enough to know it's a girl pig.

She tried to lure her with apples, but ended up with only an empty five-pound bag. She thinks the pig, which may have been someone's pet, weighs about 150 pounds.

"She's fat," Ms. Brooks said. "Somebody's definitely feeding her."

No one has reported a missing pig, though.

Ms. Brooks said she hopes someone can capture the swine and keep it. A trap she set on Wright Street didn't work.

If the pig is caught, it'll go to the Kenton County animal shelter.

But officials there aren't crazy about that prospect, since the last orphaned pig trashed its back yard.

"I don't want to shoot it," Ms. Brooks said. "But you can't just have a pig running around."
