Teen dragged by car killed
Police looking for Olds' driver

BY WILLIAM A. WEATHERS
The Cincinnati Enquirer

A Winton Terrace teen-ager was killed Monday night when he was struck by a cab and a car in Winton Hills and dragged as far as a mile.

Passers-by found Deion Smith, 13, lying in blood in the middle of Center Hill Road, about a half-block east of Este Avenue. He was rushed to Children's Hospital Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The boy was hit first by a Yellow Cab, police said, then hit by an early-1980s, dark-colored Oldsmobile Cutlass, and dragged away.

A blood trail indicated the boy was dragged nearly a mile along Winneste and Este avenues and Center Hill Road. At least twice, witnesses told police, the woman driving the car stopped, got out to look at her car, then drove on. Police were still seeking her early today.

The boy had just bought a snack from behind a truck on Winneste Avenue when he stepped from behind the truck and was hit by the cab, police said. The cab driver stopped immediately and, while looking for the boy, the teen was hit by the second car.

Elmwood Place Police Lt. James Toles said two people came to his police station just after 9 p.m. to report seeing a body in the road. When he arrived at the scene, he found the boy ''lying in a puddle of blood'' and unresponsive.

Cincinnati Police Spc. George Pille said the victim, who was taken to Children's Hospital Medical Center, appeared to have been dragged ''for a long way.''
