KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Charles Hathaway tipped in a basket as the final buzzer went off Monday to give Tennessee a 75-74 victory over Miami.

Miami (0-1) had taken a 74-73 lead with seven seconds left on Damon Frierson's running jumper. Tennessee's (2-0) Tony Harris took the inbounds pass, ran the length of the court and missed a short bank shot, which Hathaway tipped in as time ran out.

''At the end they let us throw it in,'' Tennessee coach Jerry Green said. ''They double-teamed, but they didn't foul. But double-teaming allowed Charles to be there for the rebound.''

Two Frierson free throws had given Miami a 72-63 lead, its largest margin with less than two minutes remaining.

But over the next 51 seconds, Harris hit a free throw; DeShay Jones added a basket; Harris had a layup; and Brandon Wharton hit a three-pointer to pull the Vols to within one, 72-71.

Wharton added a layup with 34 seconds left to give the Vols the lead, but Frierson followed with his basket in the final seven seconds.

''I'm very proud of our effort,'' Miami coach Charlie Coles said. ''We fought hard. It's a game we could've won, but there are no guarantees. We got a little tired at the end. We don't have the substitution pattern in the backcourt.''

Frierson's three-pointer three minutes into the second half capped a RedHawks' 15-6 run to regain the lead.

Wally Szczerbiak scored a career-high 31 points and led Miami with 10 rebounds. Frierson added 26 points and nine rebounds.

''If I wasn't so pleased with our own team right now,'' Green said after the game, ''I'd be out in the hallway getting the autographs of (Frierson and Szczerbiak). That was a tremendous effort by two people.''
