Public has ways to honor officers
Web sites, song, services, funds let strangers help

BY LISA DONOVAN
The Cincinnati Enquirer

From Web sites to a public memorial, those mourning the deaths of slain Cincinnati police officers Ronald Jeter and Daniel Pope have several outlets to express their grief, condolences or even offer a ''spiritual'' farewell.

The memorial service will be Dec. 22 from noon to 1 p.m. at the Albert B. Sabin Convention Center.

Clergy from various denominations will preside over the ''tribute - prayer service.'' It is being coordinated by Cincinnati Councilman Dwight Tillery and WLW-AM radio talk show host Bill Cunningham. Several Web sites are honoring the officers, including some high-tech sites that play ''Taps,'' a bagpipe tribute and even a gun salute. Some even have message boards where mourners can offer their condolences.

They include:

  • The Law Enforcement Officer's Memorial at http://www.inch.com/~lawwoman/memorial/memorial.htm

  • The Cincinnati Police Division's Web page at http://www.rcc.org/rcc-cpd/publish/memories.htm

  • The Officer Down Memorial Page at http://www.odmp.gen.va.us

  • Visitation for Spc. Jeter will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Hall Jordan Funeral Home, 2625 Gilbert Ave. Friday's procession to Columbus will begin at 9:45 a.m. from the funeral home, ending at the Rhema Christian Center, 2100 Agler Road. There, a eulogy is scheduled for 1:45 p.m., followed by a procession to Evergreen Cemetery at Woodland and 17th streets.

  • Hamilton County courts will be in recess this afternoon and Thursday afternoon. While personnel will be in the courthouse, the judges in common pleas and municipal courts will not be conducting their dockets. Despite the recess, all afternoon arraignments scheduled in municipal court today and Thursday will be held.

  • City council canceled today's meeting so members can attend Officer Pope's funeral. On Tuesday, council unanimously adopted a resolution asking all individuals and business and property owners in Cincinnati to lower their flags to half-staff through Friday in honor of the two slain officers.

  • Jacor-owned radio station WVMX-FM (94.1 MHz) is playing a ''Police Tribute'' song that is available for $10. Proceeds will go to a trust fund set up for the slain officers at Star Bank, which also is accepting donations.

The tribute song is Blessid Union of Souls' ''I Believe'' mixed with excerpts of listeners' reflections and the dispatcher ordering police units to the apartment where the officers were gunned down. Copies are available at the station, 1906 Highland Ave.

  • Fifth Third Bank is accepting donations at area locations for the Dan Pope-Ron Jeter Memorial Fund, which will be given to the families to help with funeral costs.
