Buddy, the 7-month-old presidential pup, will never have a chance to sow his wild oats.
The chocolate Labrador retriever will be neutered after he grows up a bit, according to a letter President and Mrs. Clinton sent recently to singer-actress Doris Day, a nationally known animal-rights activist.
Mr. Clinton was on his way to Cincinnati on Tuesday for a fund-raiser at the Amberley Village home of lawyer Stanley M. Chesley when the letter to Ms. Day was made public by the Humane Society in Washington.
Deputy presidential press secretary Barry Toiv said in Cincinnati that Ms. Day, a former Cincinnatian who has campaigned for the neutering of dogs to decrease the stray population, recently wrote to the Clintons urging them to have the procedure done on Buddy, the pet the first family acquired last summer.
The deputy press secretary would only smile and shake his head when reporters asked whether the neutering procedure might make life easier for Socks, the presidential cat.
