LEXINGTON, Ky. - Scott County looked at a videotape Thursday night of a Feb. 15 loss to Highlands and concluded it could have won the game.

In Friday's quarterfinals of the state high school boys tournament at Rupp Arena, the Cardinals exacted their revenge. Junior guard Rick Jones scored 21 points in a 72-67 win.

Scott County meets Lexington Catholic, the No. 1 team in Kentucky and No. 3 in USA Today's Super 25 poll, in the semifinals at 10 a.m. today. The Knights escaped with a 75-73 overtime win over Pleasure Ridge Park on sophomore guard Ben Wilson's bucket at the buzzer.

Though the season ended two games short of a state title, Highlands coach John Messmer praised his team's effort.

''Once you are able to get to the state tournament, naturally your kids are motivated,'' he said. ''. . . We're going to try to defend our Ninth Region championship and get back here to Rupp next year.''

Highlands junior forwards Derek Smith and Jared Lorenzen and senior forward Keith Bischoff did their part to keep Highlands' season alive. Smith scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, Lorenzen added 19 points, and Bischoff had 10 rebounds.

''We just don't quit,'' Smith said. ''We kept fighting to the buzzer.''

But when Highlands (31-4) looks for reasons for loss, three numbers stick out: The Bluebirds had just eight offensive rebounds to Scott County's 17 (the Cardinals won the overall battle, 43-41); Highlands committed 23 turnovers that Scott County turned into 19 points (senior guard Randy Stegman had six, and Lorenzen and Bischoff each had four); and the Bluebirds were just 18-of-33 from the foul line.
