DAYTON - Underdogs, overachievers or underrated.

No matter what tag is placed on the Withrow boys basketball team, the one that now fits perfectly is Division I regional champions. Paced by Ivan Johnson, the Tigers rolled to an impressive 88-71 victory over Dayton Colonel White in the championship game Friday at the University of Dayton Arena.

Withrow will play the winner of tonight's Lakewood St. Edward-Toledo St. John game in the Division I state semifinals 6 p.m. Friday.

Johnson, a 6-foot senior guard, was the take-charge guy for Withrow.

''When Jason (Crawford) went out with foul trouble in the first half, I knew I had to step it up,'' Johnson said.

Johnson (19 points in the first half) led a second-quarter outburst that enabled Withrow to extend a 31-25 edge to a 43-30 halftime lead.

''Ivan was the leader the first 15 games when Jason was out with the foot injury,'' Coach George Jackson said. ''He wasn't the MVP in the Queen City Conference for doing nothing.''

Colonel White's projected All-State guard Darryl Martin, who scored a game-high 37 points, sat out four minutes of the second quarter with three fouls.

When Martin, departed the game, Withrow held a 28-22 lead. The Tigers took advantage of his absence, going on a run that proved fatal to the Cougars.

''Our goal was not to let Martin go crazy,'' Jackson said. ''He only went crazy one time during the game.''

Withrow dominated on the inside, outrebounding Colonel White 48-26 with Brandon Hunter pulling down 12 and Johnson nine.

Withrow last appeared in the state semifinals in 1994.
