SAN ANTONIO - The horn sounded, and Wayne Turner looked as if he didn't know how to act.
A just-secured, 86-85 overtime victory in the Final Four would seem a strange time to wear a blank look on your face. But maybe it just signaled the Kentucky point guard's conflicting emotions canceling each other out.
Turner appeared half disgusted for clanging the final two of his five missed foul shots, breathing a last gasp of life into the unkillable Stanford Cardinal. He appeared half relieved that the final miss actually played into Kentucky's hands, leaving no chance for a Bryce Drew-ish inbounds play with 2.5 seconds left to beat the Wildcats.
''I couldn't believe we're going back to the championship game,'' Turner said, and he had reason for his disbelief.
Turner's final line shows him with eight points, four assists, two steals and two rebounds in 35 minutes. Throw in 2 for 8 shooting from the field and 4 for 9 shooting from the line.
Then take into account:
- The key inbounds pass he outfought Arthur Lee to corral in the final seconds.
- The one important free throw he made with 43 seconds left in regulation to give Kentucky a three-point lead.
- The three free throws he made in the final minute of overtime.
''We still won the game,'' Turner said, reminding himself and everyone else. ''That's what counts.''
