COVINGTON -- Two men face years behind bars for a shootout last summer that led police on a seven-month investigation.
Police now say revenge was what spurred Rodney Gill, 18, of Cincinnati to open fire with a pistol into a car as it drove along the 200 block of East 10th Street on a Saturday evening last August.
A bullet hit the hand of a woman driving the car, which caused her to wreck into a parked car.
That's when gunfire was returned at Mr. Gill, police say, by Cameron Daniels, 18, of Newport, a passenger in the car.
He was armed with a 12-gauge, pump shotgun.
The lengthy investigation led Detective Brett Tate to think the shooting was motivated by revenge.
Mr. Gill claims he had been robbed by Mr. Daniels, the detective said, and that he went to find Mr. Daniels that day to talk to him about the robbery.
The investigation took longer than usual because police initially only knew Mr. Gill's street name, "Apples."
What finally helped was a review of the case by Commonwealth's Attorney Don Buring's office, after which prosecutors said there was enough evidence to issue an arrest warrant against Mr. Daniels. Once Mr. Daniels was found, Detective Tate said, he was happy to cooperate against Mr. Gill.
Mr. Gill faces a charge of assault. If convicted, he could go to jail for 10 to 20 years.Mr. Daniels was charged with wanton endangerment, which carries a sentence of one to five years.
