Machine-tool orders up 14% in February
Machine-tool orders grew an estimated 14 percent in February to $811.4 million from $711.4 million a year ago, two industry trade groups report. The February totals were 35 percent higher than January's revised estimate of $598.9 million, according to the AMT -- Association for Manufacturing Technology and AMTDA, the American Machine Tool Distributors' Association.
The trade groups compute the order estimate from reports submitted by members.
Orders for the first two months of 1998 were 25 percent ahead of the same period last year.
"The strength of February's order level reflects a rebound in automotive spending on custom automated systems," Don F. Carlson, AMT president, said.
In the Midwest region, which includes Ohio and Indiana, orders from machines that cut and bend metal totaled $160.3 million in February, down 20 percent from last year.
Export orders declined 67 percent in February to $28.7 million from $87.8 million a year ago.
