DEERFIELD TOWNSHIP -- For the second straight year, a Kings High School performance group has placed first in a world competition.
The Winter Guard Corps from the Warren County school was crowned champions at Saturday's finals of the Winter Guard International world championships at the University of Dayton Arena.
For the group of 21 girls and four boys from Kings, it finished their season with a clean sweep. The Knights won all 10 of their regular season competitions and bested 44 other teams in the Scholastic Open division over the weekend in Dayton.
The Winter Guard, sometimes called the "sport of the arts," performs a combination of dance, flag twirling, rifle tossing and sabers.
Linda Main of Deerfield Township, whose daughter Krissy performs on the squad, said more than 100 parents and friends were at the competition, rooting for the Knights.
She said the team entered the finals ranked second, and that several teams were clustered with similar scores.
"When it was announced that Kings won, the kids were so excited, thrilled to death," she said.
In all divisions, more than 300 teams from throughout the United States, Canada and England competed in the three-day event. Last year, Kings won the world championship in a lower division.
