2 indicted in attack on MU student

Tuesday, April 21, 1998

BY STEVE KEMME
The Cincinnati Enquirer

HAMILTON -- Two men accused of brutally beating a Miami University student in January were indicted Monday on second-degree felonious assault charges by a Butler County grand jury.

If convicted, Steve R. Cole, 18, and Jeffrey E. Eberle, 19, could face one to 10 years in prison.

The attack occurred around 3 a.m. Jan. 18 as Christopher Jason Kindinger, a Miami sophomore, and a friend, Brad Waite, were walking on East Vine Street in Oxford.

While one attacker chased Mr. Waite, the other repeatedly kicked and struck Mr. Kindinger with an ax handle. When the one returned from chasing Mr. Waite, he joined in the beating.

Mr. Kindinger's injuries were so severe that doctors had to rebuild his left cheekbone and eye socket.

He withdrew from classes at Miami to recover at his parents' home in New Boston, Ohio.

At a February preliminary court hearing, an Oxford police detective said Mr. Cole of Oxford and Mr. Eberle of Loveland told him they were out cruising that night with two other friends, looking for someone to attack.
