Come closer to God, men told

Sunday, April 26, 1998

BY ERICA LeBORGNE
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Husbands, fathers, sons and brothers were on a mission Saturday to grow in their relationships with friends, family and God.

About 9,000 men filled the Crown for "Answer the Call IV," a conference organized by the Catholic Men's Fellowship of Greater Cincinnati.

For one day, the men put aside financial worries, family obligations and careers to reflect on growing closer to God.

Composer and recording artist Jim Berlucchi lashed out at men of the 1990s, painting many as irresponsible and immoral.

The '90s man "puts his feelings before his faith and his crisis before his cross," Mr. Berlucchi said.

He asked the men to make a commitment of faith by joining small groups of worship.

"Males by nature are providers and have to do everything on their own," said Declan O'Sullivan, one of the founders. "But sometimes they can get lost."

Adm. Jeremiah Denton, a former two-term senator from Alabama and Vietnam POW, said he is disappointed the country has strayed from its founding values.

"I'm very worried about the downfall of our nation," he said.
