Dayton suspect in shooting, car chase held

Tuesday, April 28, 1998

BY TANYA BRICKING
The Cincinnati Enquirer

The suspect in Saturday's shooting rampage -- accused of leading police on a high-speed chase from Dayton, Ohio, to Cincinnati after shooting at police officers -- is being held at the Hamilton County Justice Center in lieu of $331,500 bond.

Dreston Walker, 28, of Trotwood in suburban Dayton, appeared Monday before Hamilton County Municipal Court Judge Guy Guckenberger but did not enter a plea.

Mr. Walker's public defender, Bill Church, asked for a continuance because the income of Mr. Walker, a self-employed contractor, is too much to qualify for a public defender. He is expected to hire a lawyer and appear in court again Wednesday.

He is charged with two felonies -- failure to comply with a police order and having weapons under disability, meaning he allegedly illegally transported a 12-gauge shotgun. He also faces four misdemeanor traffic violations.

Additional felony charges are pending in Dayton.

Police say Mr. Walker fired at two Dayton officers serving a domestic-violence warrant Saturday and hit a female officer. He then allegedly shot a man while trying to commandeer a car. The victims were not seriously injured.

Mr. Walker was arrested after he allegedly fled south on Interstate 75 in a different hijacked car to Cincinnati, where the Pontiac Bonneville he was driving collided with another car in front of the Justice Center on Sycamore Street downtown.

He and Thomas Sibilski, 40, of downtown, the driver of the car that collided with Mr. Walker's, were slightly injured.
