The ramp from eastbound I-74 to northbound I-75 remained closed this morning as crews continued to clean up the mess caused Thursday morning's spill of 6,500 gallons of animal fat.
A tanker carrying 46,000 pounds of the greasy stuff lost its load when the truck rig overturned about 8:30 a.m. Thursday.
The tanker, from Kenosha, Wis., was headed to Henkel Corp. in Winton Place to deliver the animal fat, to be processed for use in soaps, detergents and personal-care items.
Instead, the truck flipped on the curved ramp and sent lard flowing into the path of morning traffic. It turned into a major traffic headache as police closed off I-74 east all day, as well as entrance ramps to Colerain, Elmore and Spring Grove avenues.
Firefighters began shoveling the lard away, and the city called in cleanup crews to scrape away what they could and pressure wash the rest.
The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, Ohio Department of Transportation and Metropolitan Sewer District aided. Workers used front-loaders and sand trucks to clean up the spill.
The tanker driver, Charles Sealock, 51, was treated at Good Samaritan Hospital for minor injuries.
