SWAT standoff ends in capture

After a four-hour standoff, Cincinnati Police SWAT units captured a North Fairmount man early today who had pointed a rifle out of his windows and threatened neighbors.

Officers took Mark Berry, 33, into custody about 2:15 a.m. after entering his home in the 1600 block of Waverley Avenue. They found him in a third-floor attic.

He was treated at the scene for cuts sustained when he broke out windows of his home, then taken to University Hospital for psychiatric evaluation, Lt. Roger Wolf said.

About two hours into the standoff, officers rescued a woman and two children who had been threatened from their second-floor apartment above Mr. Berry's residence. They were unharmed.

No shots were fired during the standoff, which began after neighbors called police about 10:20 p.m. to complain of a man brandishing a rifle and making threats, Lt. Wolf said.

Police said the man appeared intoxicated.

During the siege, officers kept spectators in the residential and industrial neighborhood about a quarter mile from the house. Relatives of the suspect were brought to the scene shortly after midnight.
