Shooting injures Walnut Hills man

Monday, May 11, 1998

A 27-year-old man was critically wounded early Sunday in a shooting in front of his residence in the 3000block of Mentor Avenue in Walnut Hills, Cincinnati police said.

Jymii Lyles, 27, was in critical condition at University Hospital, police said.

Mr. Lyles was found at 4:15 a.m. on the steps of his home. The case remains under investigation.

Car out of control; Bainbridge man killed

PAINT TOWNSHIP -- A 38-year-old Bainbridge man was killed late Saturday in a one-car crash on Cave Road.

Larry J. Beatty was a passenger in a car that went off eastbound Cave Road, struck a steel culvert and overturned about 11:10 p.m, the Highland County Sheriff's Department said. The driver, Neal P. Bowman, 19, also of Bainbridge, lost control of the car on a curve, went off the road, struck a mailbox and road sign, and then went down an embankment before striking the culvert and overturning.

Mr. Bowman was treated at Highland District Hospital and released. The sheriff's department said neither man was wearing seat belts and alcohol was a factor in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation and charges are pending against Mr. Bowman, the sheriff's department said.

Secretary of Defense pays a return visit

DELAWARE, Ohio -- Secretary of Defense William Cohen on Sunday encouraged Ohio Wesleyan University graduates to maintain a lifetime commitment to learning.

Mr. Cohen's commencement audience included 370 graduates at an outdoor ceremony on campus, about 20 miles north of Columbus. His speech drew on lessons from literature as well as his work with the military.

He was well-received, a contrast to Mr. Cohen's February visit to Columbus, where he participated with Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and National Security Adviser Sandy Berger in a town-hall meeting on Iraq at Ohio State University, which was broadcast live. In his address Sunday, Mr. Cohen spoke of global threats, including unstable financial markets, biological terrorism and efforts by Iraq to strengthen its military. He also stressed the importance of maintaining a strong presence globally.

Mr. Cohen was invited to speak at the university's 154th commencement by author Richard North Patterson, a friend of Mr. Cohen's who is a 1968 Ohio Wesleyan graduate.

Vandals desecrate cemetery in Newark

NEWARK, Ohio -- Vandals damaged 210 grave markers at the city's oldest and largest cemetery, including a monument at the grave site of the first person buried there.

The sandstone monument marks the grave of Mary Van Dyne, who was buried at Cedar Hill Cemetery in 1858.

Police said they have no suspects in what they described as the most extensive vandalism ever at the city-owned cemetery, where 35,000 people are buried.

Damage was estimated at more than $100,000.

"We've hardly had any problems," said cemetery employee Sandra Simmons. "People have been very respectful."

Cemetery superintendent Dan Applegate reported the damage shortly after 9 a.m. Saturday. The damage was concentrated on the cemetery's north side, where many of the graves date to the late 1800s.

Short-circuit fire prompts evacuation

A short-circuit in a wall outlet of a patient's room caused a two-alarm fire that prompted an evacuation of 20 patients early Sunday at Westside Health Care in Price Hill, Cincinnati fire officials said.

One patient was treated for breathing difficulty at Franciscan Hospital-Western Hills Campus and an employee was treated at University Hospital for the same problem.

The patients were evacuated to another section of the building at 1857 Grand Ave. The second firefighting unit was on the scene until 5:30 a.m. The fire damage was estimated at $500.

Cleveland motorcyclist hits ambulance, dies

CLEVELAND -- A man died when he drove his speeding motorcycle into the back of an ambulance, police said.

The ambulance, which was not on an emergency call, was in the city's west side about to make a left turn when Anthony S. Cangemi, 34, started to pass it on the left around 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Cleveland police Sgt. Mark Hastings said.

Mr. Cangemi saw the ambulance was turning and swerved back into his lane but was going too fast, Sgt. Hastings said.

Mr. Cangemi was pronounced dead at the scene.
