Driver can check Web for tie-ups

Tuesday, May 26, 1998

For travelers plotting routes, the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) has launched an Internet site detailing construction projects throughout the state.

Local information

Get updates on road conditions from SmartTraveler at http://cincinnati.com/traffic.
Dubbed the Ohio Transportation Information System (OTIS), the system is designed to report major events that slow or detour traffic on state roadways. The site is at: http://www.dot.state.oh.us on the World Wide Web.

"By alerting motorists to where delays and detours exist, we can help reduce their travel time," ODOT Director Jerry Wray said in announcing the project last week.

The system, launched primarily for construction project reporting, is designed to include traffic tie-ups such as road closings because of flooding and accidents. Users can look up problem areas by highway, region and even county.

Construction information was consistently one of ODOT's most popular Web site hits in the past, when organizers updated it only once a month. Now, the OTIS system will supply up-to-the-minute information for each of Ohio's 88 counties.
