Crowds get taste of good weather
Monday boosts food festival

Tuesday, May 26, 1998

The bands were still rocking, the beer still flowing and crowds of people still sampling food in the waning hours Monday of the 19th Annual Taste of Cincinnati.

Even free Pepto-Bismol samples still were being handed out for people like Don Kushma.

With only 90 minutes left of Taste of Cincinnati, Mr. Kushma and the five people he was with were eating their way down Central Avenue.

In 15 minutes, the group -- sampling from one another's plates -- tried swordfish, Indian food, ribs and potato pancakes.

"And we're probably not even 10 booths down yet," said Mr. Kushma, 45, of Fairfield.

Monday evening's good weather brought out some of the biggest crowds of the three-day bash. But even storms earlier in the weekend didn't keep people away.

"We were even out here yesterday in the rain," said Lola Cave, 37, of Westwood, as her son took a bite from his father's corn on the cob. The family was back Monday to sample more food, including shrimp pasta.

"We had a soggy start and a spectacular end," said Raymond Buse, public relations manager for the Greater Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce. "Today has been outstanding."

Crowd estimates weren't available Monday. An estimated 400,000 have flocked to the event in past years.
