2nd shooting suspect sought

Saturday, May 30, 1998

BURLINGTON -- Boone County police Friday continued to search for a second suspect in the fatal shooting May 21 of Roger Joseph Bowlin.

Michael J. Lewis of Walton is being held in the county jail under $1 million bond on a charge of murder.

"We know who we are looking for," police Capt. Jeff Martin said Friday. "It may take a while to locate the person . . ."

Mr. Lewis appeared in Boone District Court Thursday for a preliminary hearing and entered a plea of not guilty. The case was bound over to the grand jury.

Police said the shooting was the result of a drug transaction that apparently went bad. Boone County police and the Boone County Sheriff's Department had been investigating Mr. Bowlin for alleged drug dealing.

Detectives said Mr. Lewis and another man went to Mr. Bowlin's trailer home on Snyder Lane near Petersburg, kicked in the door and shot Mr. Bowlin in the chest. A quantity of cocaine and about $1,200 in cash was reportedly taken from the home.

Mr. Bowlin's fiancee, Amy Sebree, her brother, Andy Kynetz, and two young children were in the trailer but were not harmed.
