Man crushed under bus tires

Sunday, May 31, 1998

The Cincinnati Enquirer

A 26-year-old man was killed after he tripped and fell under the tires of a moving Metro bus Saturday morning in Madisonville.

The man had been sitting on a bench beside the bus, wearing a portable radio and headphones. The bus was stopped for a break at the end of its route, near 5010 Kenwood Road.

Around 9:55 a.m., as the bus started moving, the man jumped up suddenly, according to witnesses. He tripped and landed in front of the bus.

Cincinnati police would not identify the man Saturday evening because his family had not been notified. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The bus driver, Patricia ByBee, 53, was not charged.

Ms. ByBee told police that she did not see the man rise from the bench. She apparently did not realize she had hit him. Witnesses said people waiting at the next bus stop, about 100 feet away, began pointing and shouting to Ms. ByBee.

Ms. ByBee has driven a Metro Bus since 1985 and is considered a good driver, said Metro spokeswoman Sallie Hilvers.

The man was the third person to be killed by a Metro bus since 1990, Ms. Hilvers said.
