Domestic dispute ends with killing

Sunday, May 31, 1998

BY ANDREA TORTORA
The Cincinnati Enquirer

COVINGTON -- A domestic dispute erupted into a crime of passion between a married couple and another man early Saturday, ending in the stabbing death of the husband, police said.

The incident happened at 4:20 a.m. when an argument between Girard Crosby, his wife, Jamie Crosby, and Robert Hayden turned violent at the Crosbys' home in the 600 block of Thomas Street.

Mr. Crosby was dead when police arrived. He died of multiple stab wounds.

Mrs. Crosby and Mr. Hayden were both cut. They were taken to St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington. The hospital would not release any information on their conditions.

"I hate to say this is a typical homicide," said Lt. Col. Steve Schmidt, Covington assistant police chief.

"But it goes to show that even if we put a policeman on every corner we wouldn't be able to stop this kind of homicide."

"This is hard to stop when people know each other and are in their homes."

Police charged Mr. Hayden with murder and assault. When he is released from the hospital, he will be sent to the Kenton County Jail.

Police think Mr. Hayden was living at the Crosby home.

Mr. Crosby's death brings to four the number of murder investigations this year for the Covington detective bureau.

On Jan. 17, the body of Kimberly Sue Sipe, 24, was pulled from the Licking River.

Her family last saw her the morning of Jan. 12 before she dropped her 8-year-old son, Tyrone, off at school in Newport.

She then was headed to St. Elizabeth Hospital South in Edgewood, where her daughter, Jaslin, was being kept because she had been born prematurely the week before. Police are still investigating. On Feb. 2, John Browning, 30, of Clifton Avenue, was shot in the left side of his chest shortly after 2:30 a.m.

His body was found lying against a fence in the 300 block of East 13th Street.

Donnell Gallagher, 21, who lives in the Jacob Price housing complex, was arrested by Covington police and charged with Mr. Browning's slaying.

Police think the killing was drug related.

On Feb. 22, the body of Timothy Casada, 41, of South Lebanon was discovered along the Licking River wrapped in a rug.

Police said Mr. Casada's body showed signs of trauma consistent with a homicide. Police are investigating the case.
