Gay teacher can keep contract

Wednesday, June 3, 1998

U.S. District Judge Susan J. Dlott gave each side half a loaf Tuesday in the final battle over gay teacher Bruce N. Glover's reinstatement at Williamsburg Elementary School.

She agreed to a request from the Williamsburg school board in Clermont County that it be free to assign him to the middle school if no position were open in the lower grades.

However, she rejected the board's request that he be reinstated with a one-year contract.

Last month, Judge Dlott ruled that the board violated Mr. Glover's right to equal protection when it refused to renew his contract two years ago.

The only reason, she said, was Mr. Glover's sexual orientation. She awarded him $71,492 for back pay and humiliation, and reinstatement to a two-year contract at the elementary school.

The board argued unsuccessfully that he was only entitled to a one-year contract after his first, probationary year.

Superintendent Robin A. Wylie said any comment would be premature because the judge's rulings would be discussed at the next regular board meeting, 7 p.m. June 8 at the high school.
