Kris McQueen pleaded for someone to save him Monday night, moments after being shot in the lower abdomen in a struggle with another teen on an Evanston street.
"Hey, ma'am, I'm getting shot, man!" the 16-year-old Evanston boy screamed to a 911 operator.
"Hurry up . . . just hurry up!"
Police arrived at 3052 Woodburn Ave. about 9:45 p.m., just after Mr. McQueen dropped the phone. A rescue crew rushed him to University Hospital, where he was in critical condition and undergoing surgery Tuesday.
Two minutes after police arrived at the scene, another call came in to the 911 communications center. It led police directly to the alleged shooter.
"My son said some guy just tried to shoot him and something about the gun went off and shot the guy," the caller said.
The 16-year-old boy got on the phone and explained: "He already robbed me once."
According to police records, Mr. McQueen was the one with the gun and had gone up to the other teen asking what was in his pockets. The teens then struggled for the gun.
Mr. McQueen was the only one injured. Police have charged the other teen with felonious assault.
Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 352-3040.
