COVINGTON -- Gunshots rang through a Covington neighborhood Saturday afternoon when an elderly man got into a shootout with police.
James E. Franklin, 68, of Elsmere, was arrested after firing at least six shots at Covington Officer Kevin Brady, police said. Neither Officer Brady, who fired back, nor Mr. Franklin were injured. Mr. Franklin is expected to be charged with attempted murder, Covington police said.
Police were called to the Garrard Convalescent Home in the 400 block of Garrard Street at 5:11 p.m. to a report of a man loading a handgun. When Officer Brady arrived, the suspect fired six rounds at him from a .357 handgun, missing all six times, police said. Officer Brady returned fire, missing the suspect.
Police arrested Mr. Franklin after he ran out of rounds and was trying to reload his handgun. Mr. Franklin offered no motive for the shootout, police said.
A neighbor of Mr. Franklin, who lived in the 1300 block of Garvey Street, said the suspect was a quiet, elderly man.
"They say he did what?" asked a shocked Rosetta Gaines, who lives a few doors down.
Mr. Franklin would often be seen walking in the neighborhood and was never known to cause any problems, Ms. Gaines said.
Officer Brady, 32, is a five-year veteran of the force.
