FAIRFIELD -- A scholarship fund for Fairfield Senior High School students could grow by $20,000 depending on the outcome of a brick-selling drive now under way.
The Fairfield Commemorative Brick Committee plans to install the bricks in a 400-square-foot area on the plaza level in front of the flagpole at Fairfield Senior High School.
The design selected for the area includes a 9-square-foot centerpiece donated by J-II Homes.
It features a granite Indian head, the school seal and the letters FHS, said Ken Rhodus, a 1974 Fairfield High School graduate who is spearheading the effort with board president Mike Oler.
The perimeter of the area will be done in charcoal brick. The rest of the bricks will be either red or a concrete color to represent the red and white school colors.
"We will not be done selling the bricks until we tear up every piece of concrete," Mr. Rhodus said. "We have room for 1,800 bricks in the first phase, half of which will be engraved."
The committee has already sold 325 bricks. If all 900 are sold, about $20,000 will be given to the Fairfield Community Scholarship Foundation, Mr. Rhodus said.
All of the bricks in the design will be laid by early August, Mr. Rhodus said.
Much of the work is being done at a discount by Wye-Delta Electric and H&H Superstructures, both of which are run by Fairfield High School graduates.
"We're telling people they can use the bricks to honor graduates, the memory of a classmate, a family member, a Scout group or to support the schools," Mr. Rhodus said.
Each brick can be engraved with up to three lines, with a maximum of 14 characters per line.
The lettering will be done in upper-case letters only with a black epoxy finish.
Cost is $50 per brick or two for $90. Students and alumni may purchase bricks for $40.
To order
Order forms are available at the high school or at administrative offices, 211 Donald Drive. Checks should be made out to Fairfield City Schools and mailed to the attention of the treasurer.
