Moya gives ATP top 10 -- for now

Wednesday, July 1, 1998

MEN'S TOP 10

1. Pete Sampras.
2. Marcelo Rios.
3. Petr Korda.
4. Carlos Moya.
5. Greg Rusedski.
6. Patrick Rafter.
7. Yevgeny Kafelnikov.
8. Jonas Bjorkman.
9. Alex Corretja.
10. Cedric Pioline.
French Open champion Carlos Moya, ranked No. 4 in the world, has committed to play in the Great American Insurance ATP Championship, giving the tournament all of the current top 10 players.

Of course, this doesn't mean the top 10 will remain the same going into the Aug. 10-16 event at the ATP Tennis Center in Mason. Last year, when Thomas Muster committed to the ATP on June 27, it gave the tourney all top 10 players, but when the event began, then-No. 9 Moya was missing.

The last two years, the ATP has had nine of the top 10 players. The tourney has never had all 10.

Since 1979, there have been 26 Grand Slam champions in 77 of tennis' major tournaments, and of those only Bjorn Borg and Moya have not played in Cincinnati at some point.

The ATP field now includes 19 of the top 20 players. It will be Moya's first U.S. appearance since his victory in Paris.
