Sedamsville blast forces evacuation

Friday, July 3, 1998

An explosion Thursday morning at a grain transport center in Sedamsville launched burning dust particles into the air and raised worries about firefighters' safety.

No one was injured in the 9:10 a.m. blast at Consolidated Grain and Barge, in the 3100 block of Southside Avenue, but 10 workers were evacuated and the structure sustained about $250,000 in damage, authorities said.

"We were being very careful with the smoldering fire," District 2 Fire Chief Ron Davis said. "We were afraid of suspending more dust in the air and causing another explosion in the chutes."

No one is sure what ignited the dust, a product of the grain that is transported daily from barges into silos and back into barges. Results of an investigation will not be available for several days.
