Woman charged in armed robberies

Middletown police have arrested a woman and charged her in two armed robberies in the city, including one at a pizza restaurant late Friday night.

Erin K. Murphy, 26, of Middletown, faces two charges of aggravated robbery. She was being held in the Middletown jail Saturday afternoon; an arraignment was scheduled for Monday.

According to police, a female with a ski mask and armed with a handgun robbed a Pizza Hut in the 1300 block of Breiel Boulevard just before 11 p.m. Friday. A witness gave police a license plate number and description of a vehicle in which the robber was seen leaving.

The vehicle was spotted shortly afterward on Bonita Drive in Middletown, where investigators linked the vehicle and robbery to Mrs. Murphy. She faces a second charge in a Wednesday armed robbery at the First Choice Video in the 3400 block of Dixie Highway in Middletown.

8 pounds of marijuana confiscated

A 23-year-old Price Hill man was arrested near his home Saturday for possession of 8 pounds of marijuana.

Michael R. Roseberry, of the 4500 block of Clearview Avenue, faces a felony drug possession charge.

Officers from the Cincinnati Street Corner Unit made the arrest at 2:20 p.m. in the 4500 block of Century Lane.

Rights advocate on board of Amnesty

Veteran Cincinnati human rights advocate Bert B. Lockwood Jr. has been elected to a 4-year term on the board of Amnesty International USA.

He also has been convener of its legal support network and editor-in-chief of the network newsletter.

Mr. Lockwood is professor at the University of Cincinnati College of Law and director of the Urban Morgan Institute for Human Rights.

Gas canister blast hurts 4 at plant

MORAINE, Ohio -- A canister of compressed gas exploded Saturday morning at a General Motors plant in this Dayton suburb, injuring four people and damaging two Chevrolet Blazers.

The injured were treated at Kettering Memorial Hospital and released.

Moraine fire Lt. Phil Sinewe said the canister exploded at the bus and truck assembly plant around 9 a.m., causing a fire that damaged the vehicles. There was no structural damage to the plant.

The plant has been closed since last month because of the GM strike. Workers at the plant were doing routine maintenance scheduled for the annual Fourth of July shutdown.

Observatory offers Thursday viewings

The Cincinnati Observatory Center in Mount Lookout is offering viewings, by appointment only, to the public on Thursday nights. Maximum group size is 40. Organized star gazing, astronomy lectures and other activities are also available.

Community agency presents awards

The Cincinnati-Hamilton County Community Action Agency honored several people recently with awards:

LaTina Hendricks, 30, of Roselawn received an achievement award. With the help of the Head Start education program, she received her cosmetology certificate and opened her own beauty shop.

Barbara Denson, 34, of Walnut Hills; Philip Clark, 33, of Bond Hill and Earl Gilbert, 35, of the West End, were recognized for volunteer activities with Head Start. The Procter & Gamble Foundation and Lucius Bell, a manager of a McDonald's restaurant in Columbia Township, were recognized for sponsorship of the agency.

Lois Eddings, 59, of College Hill, was honored for mentoring, Nona Adams of Walnut Hills was recognized for public service and Bill Marshall, 59, of Delhi, was recognized for volunteerism.

Fire burns hangar at Cuyahoga airport

RICHMOND HEIGHTS, Ohio -- A fire and a gas leak engulfed an airport hangar, injuring one firefighter, authorities said.

Fire departments from three cities extinguished the fire Friday evening in a private hangar at Cuyahoga County Airport owned by MBNA Corp., police dispatcher Jeanne Holden said. The credit card company is based in Wilmington, Del., but its chairman and chief executive, Al Lerner, is from Cleveland.

Firefighter John Zehe was listed in fair condition Saturday at Meridia Hillcrest Hospital.

Bull on the loose in suburb killed

BRECKSVILLE, Ohio -- Police shot and killed a 1,600-pound bull after it escaped from a corral and roamed this Cleveland suburb for about four hours. The bull slipped out of a saddlery store's corral Friday and hit several cars, including a police cruiser, said Detective James Lobenthal. The animal also wandered onto a baseball field and sent players and spectators running.

The bull was with One Armed Bandits & Co., a show traveling from Oklahoma to Pennsylvania. The group's three bulls were staying in the corral while one of the company's vehicles was being repaired.
