The public will get its first chance tonight to comment on the proposed charter plan that would change Cincinnati's way of electing its mayor and council.
Build Cincinnati, the bipartisan committee formed to develop the plan, will hold a public hearing from 6:30 to 8 p.m. today at the Urban League office, 3458 Reading Road, Avondale.
Two more public meetings will be held -- one July 14 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Westwood Town Hall, and another July 21 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Oakley Community Center.
Build Cincinnati has proposed a plan that could be on the ballot this fall. It would:
Have a direct election system for mayor, with a partisan primary.
Make the mayor the chief executive officer of the city, with direct control over day-to-day operations of city government.
Replace the current at-large system for electing council with a system where council members would be elected from districts.
If the plan reaches the ballot and is approved by Cincinnati voters, it would replace the council-manager form of government Cincinnati has had for 70 years.
