Project coordinator unnamed
Housing group hopes to have nominee soon

NEWPORT -- Newport Housing Authority officials hope to have a recommendation for the new position of project coordinator for low-income housing development and relocation at the July 20 meeting.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
Requirements cited by housing authority Executive Director Mark Brown for the project coordinator include:

- A college degree in public administration, planning, community development, business administration or a related field.

- Five years of work experience in real-estate development, finance, community development, program management or a closely related area.

- Three years' experience in a managerial or supervisory capacity.

Housing authority Executive Director Mark Brown told board members at a special meeting Wednesday that he had received eight resumes for the job, which will involve coordination and management services related to relocation of people living in the housing authority complex.

"This would be a person who would be in Newport all the time, working with the authority to help develop housing opportunities," Mr. Brown said. "Our (housing authority) expertise is not development. We are involved with housing. This person would handle development and relocation."

The authority is putting together a plan to eventually relocate the families presently in the 202 public housing units along the flood wall north of Fourth Street. That plan will include construction of housing in several areas around the city and the eventual demolition of the housing units on the 12.9-acre site.

It is estimated that the authority will need $15 million to $20 million to provide housing for the families that are displaced from the old housing complex.

"Any discussion of possible purchasers of the property has been put on the back burner for now," Mr. Brown said. "My charge at this point is redevelopment of Newport housing and relocation of the residents."

He said he will contact some of the people who sent in resumes for the project coordinator position and set up interviews. "I don't think we will interview every one who applied, because we have specific requirements for the job," he said.

The project coordinator will coordinate housing opportunities and other programs for the authority, and manage new development in coordination with the city and other organizations.
