Ohio river still "unhelthful"
The Ohio River water-quality index has reached "unhealthful" levels for the fifth straight week, the Cincinnati Health Department reported Wednesday.
The latest reading -- based on samples collected Tuesday -- was 32. Any reading above 30 on the zero-to-60 scale indicates unhealthful conditions.
The index measures bacterial pollution caused primarily by untreated sewage. While the bacteria are no threat to treated drinking water, recreational users risk illness.
Training reduces girls' knee injuries
A Cincinnati researcher reported Wednesday that better training for young female athletes reduces their risk of knee injury.
Historically, female athletes have been four to six times more likely to suffer serious knee injuries than male athletes. The difference was eliminated among young women who participated in a six-week jump training program designed by the Cincinnati Sportsmedicine and Research Foundation.
The study, conducted last year, involved 1,263 Tristate athletes from 43 high schools. There were 10 serious knee injuries among the 463 female athletes who did not participate, but two injuries among the 366 women who completed the training -- the same number of injuries as reported among 434 male athletes used as a control group.
The study was presented by Dr. Timothy Hewett before the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, meeting in Vancouver, British Columbia.
