Police substation money contributed

Friday, July 17, 1998

A police substation in Mount Washington is slated to be finished by the end of the summer.

Star Bank is contributing the final $11,000 needed for the $24,450 project.

The Mount Washington Civic Association raised the first $13,300, and Cincinnati Councilman Phil Heimlich, a Mount Washington resident, pushed for the rest. Star Bank agreed to his request.

"This substation will allow officers to maintain a visible presence in our neighborhood, without having to drive 6 or 8 miles to District 2 in Hyde Park," Mr. Heimlich said. "The net result is Mount Washington will be a safer place to live and work."

The substation will be at the intersection of Beechmont and Mears avenues on the property of Anderson Hills Plumbing, which is donating the space.

The police division has about 30 substations. They are simply a meeting space, or a desk for officers to do paperwork before returning to their beats.

Children's health funded with grant

OXFORD -- Dr. Ellen Buerk, an Oxford pediatrician, has received a $6,500 grant to promote expanded medical and mental health services to low-income children at the Oxford Family Resource Center.

Dr. Buerk was one of four Ohio pediatricians to receive a "Community Access to Child Health" grant, awarded by the American Academy of Pediatrics and funded by Wyeth-Ayerst Laboratories. Dr. Buerk has been working with local schools, hospitals and other agencies to develop a health care advisory team to encourage more cooperation on child health needs.
