Patton graces Piner for town meeting

Friday, July 17, 1998

BY CATERINE TSAI
The Cincinnati Enquirer

PINER -- There hasn't been a visitor like this since Happy came to town.

On Wednesday, Gov. Paul Patton will be the first governor since A.B. "Happy" Chandler to visit rural Piner when he holds a town meeting at the Korner Market.

Citizens can gather at 8:15 a.m. at the intersection of Ky. 14 and 17 in southern Kenton County to jaw with the governor.

Kentucky voters have been known for turning away candidates who want to be governor more than once, so Mr. Chandler, a former senator and baseball commissioner, was a rare, two-time governor in the days before consecutive terms were allowed.

Now, state law allows Mr. Patton to run for a second consecutive term. If he wins, he'll be the first to score two terms in a row since 1800.

The governor will make other stops in Northern Kentucky on Wednesday for speeches, town meetings and question-and-answer sessions. After Piner, he heads to Florence for another town meeting at the city building at 9:45 a.m. He'll present a symbolic check for $225,000 toward a project to provide sidewalks, lighting and landscaping along a stretch of historic Main Street.

Then at noon, the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce will feature him in a congressional forum at the Metropolitan Club in Covington.

He is expected to field questions from a group of more than 100 of the area's business leaders.

Finally, he will visit Gallatin County at 2:15 p.m. for more conversation with constituents at 603 E. Main St. in Warsaw.
