Heat prompts smog alert for Monday

Anticipating a hot week, Hamilton County officials declared a smog alert for Monday with the likelihood it would continue.

They urged Tristate residents to reduce their driving and to refuel their vehicles and use gas-powered lawn tools only after sundown. That will reduce the building of pollutants, which are major contributors to smog.

Air quality numbers were low on Friday and the weekend was expected to be breezy, which is not conducive to smog buildup, Sarah Brugger at the Department of Environmental Services said.

However, forecasters said next week probably would be the hottest of the year so far, Ms. Brugger added.
