A glossary of different racing leagues and subsidiary programs that Jerry Carroll's Kentucky Speedway will try to bring here:

NASCAR (National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing)
  • Winston Cup: The major league of stock car racing, starring Dale Earnhardt and Jeff Gordon. The annual battle for Winston Cup points runs from February through November.

  • Busch Grand National: The "Triple A" league of NASCAR, although several Winston drivers sometimes compete here. It is also a proving ground for younger drivers such as Glenn Allen Jr., a Cincinnati native in his third year on the circuit.

  • Craftsman Truck: Developed three years ago, the tour for American-manufactured pickup trucks has seen interest rise with the general surge in NASCAR popularity. Mike Skinner won the first season title (1995) and parlayed it into a Winston Cup ride.

Nine different divisions including Slim Jim All-Pro and Goody's Dash series. The Slim Jim is one possibility, according to Kentucky Speedway consultant Don Schumacher.

    LOCAL DIVISION (Weekly short tracks)
Includes Louisville Motor Speedway, which the Carroll group bought last December. Louisville has a Craftsman Truck race (late August) that is expected to move to Gallatin County eventually.

  • CART (Championship Auto Racing Teams)
The premier open-wheel series in America, starring Alex Zanardi, Michael Andretti and Al Unser Jr.

    IRL (Indy Racing League)
Founded in 1996 as a low-cost alternative to CART, its series is headlined by the Indianapolis 500.

ARCA (Automobile Racing Club of America)
Its cars are almost identical to Winston Cup cars, and the league is emerging from its minor-league status to draw bigger crowds yearly. Its entire annual schedule is televised, including some races on ESPN and ESPN2.

    ASA (American Speed Association)
The national stock car series has produced drivers such as Mark Martin, Rusty Wallace, Dick Trickle, Ted Musgrave and Cincinnati's Glenn Allen Jr.

    USAC (United States Automobile Club)
Silver Crown series (similar to sprint cars)

    Sports car classes
Sports Car Club of America (SCCA); Trans Am series, World Sports Car Championship (WSCC), GT Series (includes driving teams such as Cincinnati's Larry Schumacher).

    AMA (American Motorcycle Association)
Could run on the road course at Kentucky Speedway

    NHRA (National Hot Rod Association)
The dragsters are not on the master plan right now, but Kentucky Speedway officials say a drag strip is possible down the road.
