$180M pot draws "nouveau' Powerball players

Saturday, July 25, 1998

BY GREGORY A. HALL
The Cincinnati Enquirer

COVINGTON -- Unlike nearly everybody else in lines for Powerball tickets Friday, Pat Short doesn't understand the added attraction of a near-record $180 million jackpot.

The 47-year-old Colerain Township woman plays the lottery every week -- even if the jackpots are a mere few millions.

"If you can't live with two or three million (dollars), you're in bad shape," she said Friday.

Tickets can be purchased from Kentucky or Indiana lottery vendors until 10 p.m. tonight. The drawing is at 11 p.m.

Homer Ramby of Waynesville has eyed big jackpots from afar. He almost drove from Tennessee to Florida a few years ago for a big lottery.

Friday, he was in Northern Kentucky to pick up a friend and decided to enter.

"You can't win if you don't play it," he said.

Craig Simon, 24, of Oakley, isn't that optimistic.

Mr. Simon, who works in Northern Kentucky, bought 30 tickets for his roommate's co-workers. But not for himself.

"I'm just unlucky," he said. "Really unlucky."
