Police arrest man wanted in Akron murder

Sunday, July 26, 1998

Cincinnati Police have arrested a man who was wanted in connection with a murder in Akron.

Police said Dante D. Gordon, 20, was arrested about 9 p.m. Friday in the 1000 block of Gilbert Avenue after he was stopped by police and gave them a false name. He was charged with falsification and obstructing official business.

After police learned the man's identity, they discovered he was wanted on a warrant for aggravated murder.

Akron police were looking for Mr. Gordon in connection with the December slaying of Gregory Parnigian, 38, of Barberton, Ohio, who was shot in the head during a quarrel.

5-year-old's charge leads to sexual assault arrest

A Price Hill man was being held late Saturday on $1 million bond after a 5-year-old girl told police she was sexually assaulted.

Adam Emig, 18, was arrested Friday on charges of rape and gross sexual imposition. He was being held in the Hamilton County Justice Center.

While imposing the high bond, Hamilton County Municipal Court Judge Dennis Helmick noted the victim's age and said, "I'm not sure any bond is appropriate."

The girl told police the offense occurred June 30 at a Price Hill home.

Westwood fire causes $20,000 damage to home

A fire caused by food unattended on a stove caused $20,000 in damage to a Westwood home late Friday.

The fire started about 11 p.m. at 2702 LaFeuille Circle. Cincinnati Fire Division firefighters battled the blaze, which they contained to the first floor of a two-story home.

Three people were left temporarily homeless by the fire and the Cincinnati-area chapter of the American Red Cross helped them find a place to stay.

Studies seek pregnant women, healthy people

The University of Cincinnati is seeking volunteers for two health-related studies.

Women pregnant eight weeks or less, ages 18-39, are needed for a bone mineral-content study. The idea is to compare the effect of calcium tablets on women who exercise frequently and women who don't. Information: 558-4297.

Meanwhile, healthy people ages 21-59 are needed for a worker safety test. The idea is to test how working on inclined and elevated surfaces affects job performance. Information: 558-0529.

United Way looking for donations of a day

Cincinnati's United Way & Community Chest is looking for companies and organizations that will spend a day helping local social service agencies.

The 12th annual Community Care Week will be celebrated Sept. 13-19. Local businesses and organizations will spend a day that week doing repairs, landscaping, painting and other projects for a United Way agency.

Last year, 90 area companies and organizations donated time to nearly 100 projects at 64 agencies. To volunteer, call 762-7192.

World War II veterans gather for 41st reunion

FORT MITCHELL -- Several hundred 96th Infantry Division World War II veterans who fought in the Philippines and helped conquer Okinawa attended their 41st reunion Saturday.

More than 700 veterans and their spouses were at Drawbridge Estates to remember and to maintain old friendships.

Don Dencker, past president of the 96th Infantry Division Association, said the camaraderie of the veterans survives because of what the men suffered through during the war.

A memorial service was held to honor those who died during the war and those who have died since. Tom Roby, who served in Company C of the 382nd unit, spoke during the service.

Dennis Ballew hugs his sister-in-law, Shirley McIntosh, before a walk in Loveland Saturday morning in memory of his son Brian Ballew, 20, who died December from complications from a seizure. The Little Miami Trail walk was sponsored by the Greater Cincinnati Council for Epilepsy.
